One of the simplest upgrades you can make to your Jeep that delivers real-world performance and peace of mind is a quality battery. For Jeepers running auxiliary lighting, winches, aftermarket sound systems, or even just heading out into the cold where stock batteries can struggle, the Odyssey Performance Series AGM Battery (Group 34) is a serious step up.

We installed one of these in the jeepfan.com 2004 Wrangler TJ Unlimited and haven’t looked back.
Built for Abuse
Odyssey’s Performance Series uses AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) technology, which isn’t new, but they’ve taken it to another level. This Group 34 model features deep-cycle capability, faster recharge times, and increased vibration resistance—a big deal when you’re bouncing around trails or hammering down a washboard road.
Unlike your average wet-cell battery, AGMs won’t leak, don’t need maintenance, and can take a beating. The Group 34 is a perfect physical fit for the Wrangler’s tray (both TJ and JK) and it’s rated at 850 cold cranking amps (CCA)—which is stout even by truck standards.
Specs That Matter
- CCA: 850
- Reserve Capacity: 135 minutes
- Weight: 46.6 lbs
- Vibration Resistance: Extreme
- Recharge Time: 4–6 hours (with proper charger)
- Terminals: SAE posts
- Warranty: 3 years
This battery isn’t cheap—but when you compare it to the cost of getting stuck with a dead battery on the trail or a winch that can’t pull its own weight, it starts to look like a smart investment.
Real-World Use in the Jeep
We installed the Odyssey Performance Series Group 34 in the jeepfan.com 2004 Wrangler TJ Unlimited that sees mostly occasional use and weekend trail time. The Jeep is running an 8000 lb winch and a small air compressor under the hood for the air lockers and occasional air-up.

We did a fair amount of winch use while building our new garage. The Jeep and its winch were very handy for moving large landscape rocks around. The winch never showed signs of slowing down. A good test prior to putting to the test when it really matters on the trail.

After a few weeks of real-world testing in cool spring temps, the Odyssey showed off:
- Consistent voltage even after winching
- Stable idle voltage with electrical accessories on
- Fast recharge time with the stock alternator
The battery’s weight (nearly 47 lbs) is noticeable when installing, but that’s part of the tradeoff for having thick internal plates and a rugged case. Once bolted in with the stock hold-down bracket, it’s rock solid.
What We Like
✅ Drop-in fit for most Wranglers and CJs with no modification
✅ Deep-cycle capable—great for lights, fridges, and winches
✅ Fast recharge time
✅ Sealed design—no leaks, no maintenance
✅ Cold weather performance
What to Consider
❌ Not cheap—you’re paying for serious performance
❌ Heavy—close to 50 lbs
❌ Must use a compatible AGM charger for best lifespan and performance. Many newer and even inexpensive chargers have AGM compatibility.
Final Thoughts
The Odyssey Performance Series Group 34 isn’t really for those who only drives their Jeep to the grocery store. This is a battery for Jeepers who use their rig, whether that means winching, crawling, or camping off-grid. It’s overbuilt in the best way—and if you’re tired of your budget battery giving up when you need it most, this one’s worth the upgrade.
If you’re the kind of Jeep owner who doesn’t mind investing in real capability, the Odyssey AGM is a top contender.
