The jeepfan.com CJ was converted using a custom distributor using factory style HEI components and it has been rock solid in reliability for the Jeep. These conversions typically require custom spark plug wires that fit the HEI distributor cap as well as the firing order and design of the AMC engine, this is where the Live Wires from Performance Distributors come in.

We’ve been running Live Wires on the Jeep for many years with no issues until a few wires were damaged while installing new valve covers. In our case we are replacing the original set of Live Wires with a fresh new set.
About Live Wires
When it comes to getting the most out of your ignition system—especially if you’re running a built-up Jeep with a modified engine or performance distributor—factory spark plug wires can become a weak link. Enter Performance Distributors Live Wires, a set of high-performance spark plug wires that promise durability, clean routing, and serious spark energy delivery.

Built to Take the Heat
One of the first things you notice about the Live Wires is the build quality. These wires are 8mm in diameter and feature a high-temperature sleeve that protects against heat soak—ideal for tight engine bays or trail rigs that see slow, high-temp crawling. According to Performance Distributors, these wires are rated up to 1,400°F, which gives peace of mind when you’re idling up a steep grade with the header glowing nearby.
Spiral Core = Strong Signal, Low Interference
Live Wires use a spiral-wound core, which is key for two reasons. First, they deliver a solid spark with low resistance—great for complete combustion and better throttle response. Second, they suppress EMI (electromagnetic interference), which is important if you’re running sensitive electronics like fuel injection controllers or digital gauges.
After installation, idle smoothed out slightly and throttle tip-in felt crisper. It’s not a dramatic seat-of-the-pants power gain, but there’s no doubt these wires deliver a cleaner, more consistent spark.
Custom Fit + Numbered Ends
Another win: each wire is numbered and cut to exact lengths for your application. No guesswork, no ugly loops or tight bends. Performance Distributors offers sets specific to engine and distributor setups—including HEI, D.U.I., and factory-style caps.
In our case, the wires dropped right onto the factory-style distributor cap and coil without modification. They clicked into place securely, and the boots fit snugly on both ends—important when you’re bouncing around off-road.
Trail-Tested and Tuned
We’ve taken our Jeep out on many trail runs after the install. Engine temps stayed stable, and there was no hint of misfire even after a hours of low-speed crawling. Combined with a performance HEI the Live Wires helped maintain spark integrity under load and low RPMs—where off-road engines live most of their lives.
We also appreciated the added visual under the hood. The wires come in a variety of colors (we chose black since we aren’t flashy), and they clean up the look of the engine bay nicely without looking out of place on a trail Jeep.
The Bottom Line
Performance Distributors Live Wires are a smart upgrade if you’re running a performance ignition or just want more durability and better spark control in your Jeep. They’re tough, reliable, and made in the USA. They’re not the cheapest wires out there—but for what you get, the value is hard to beat.
Pros:
- Heat-resistant sleeving
- Low resistance, EMI-suppressing spiral core
- Custom-length for clean install
- Snug-fitting boots, numbered wires
Cons:
- Slightly pricier than standard sets
- Not a huge performance boost without other ignition upgrades
If you’re already running a D.U.I. distributor or high-output coil, these wires make a lot of sense. Even on a mildly modded Jeep, they offer peace of mind and a clean spark every time.
Installation
This install doesn’t take long and can be probably done in an hour at a causal pace. Remove the old wires making sure you note the firing order..that’s 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 on an AMC V8 and you make note of where the #1 cylinder on the distributor is.

Prepare the spark plugs and the distributor terminals with some dielectric grease provided with the wire kit. This ensures a good electrical connection as well as preventing the boot from sticking to the terminal or plug.

Start installing the wires according to the firing order pre-routing them to where they will end. Plug the wire ends to the spark plugs then neaten up the install.

Verify the firing order and run the Jeep to check to misfires or incorrect wire installs. Make sure to route the wires so they don’t get caught on items especially the throttle. Also, make sure the wires are away from excess heat sources and areas that can cause excess wear.
