Performance, Sound, and Simplicity Under the Hood. When it comes to breathing life into your 1997–2006 Jeep TJ Wrangler, few upgrades are as simple and effective as a cold air intake. The aFe (Advanced Flow Engineering) cold air intake system is a go-to choice for Jeep owners looking for better throttle response, improved airflow, and a throatier engine sound — all without diving deep into the mechanical rabbit hole.

Why Upgrade to an aFe Cold Air Intake?
The factory air box on the TJ Wrangler is restrictive by design. It’s built to meet emissions and sound regulations more than performance goals. That’s where the aFe system comes in — it replaces the stock air box and filter with a high-flow, reusable filter and a smooth intake tube designed to cut turbulence and deliver more oxygen to your 4.0L straight six.
Here are the main benefits you’ll notice after swapping it in:
- Improved Airflow: aFe designs their intake to pull cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay. That air, routed through a mandrel-bent intake tube, feeds the engine with less restriction than stock.
- Increased Throttle Response: You don’t need a dyno chart to feel the difference in the pedal. It’s sharper. The engine feels less choked and more eager to rev.
- Better Sound: The 4.0L engine isn’t quiet to begin with, but the aFe intake adds a deeper tone under throttle — a satisfying growl that reminds you why you chose the TJ.
- Reusable Filter: The oiled cotton gauze filter is washable and reusable. No more buying paper filters every oil change.
Installation: Straightforward and Garage-Friendly
Installing the aFe intake on a TJ is an easy weekend project, or even a weeknight one. The jeepfan.com 2004 Wrangler TJ Unlimited had the stock airbox with a K&N filter from the previous owner. The old filter was looking a little ragged and was in need of replacement. We installed an aFe Cold Air Intake on it.
What You’ll Need:
- About an hour
- Basic hand tools (flathead screwdriver, socket set)
- A clean workspace
- Possibly a nice coffee or cold beverage for motivation
Steps:
Remove the Factory Air Box and Tube:
Unplug the intake air temperature sensor, loosen the clamps, and remove the factory intake tube. The air box is held down with a few bolts and pops out without much of a fight.

Install the aFe Intake Tube and Filter:
Mount the heat shield in the same place as the old air box. The grille support rod will pass through the shield so the bolt holding it to the grill will need to be removed. Install the grommet on the rod and slide the shield over the rod. Secure the shield and replace the grille support rod bolt.

Install the new Tube and Reconnect the IAT Sensor:
The aFe system is designed to accept the factory intake air temperature sensor. Carefully remove it from the factory tube and carefully transfer it over to the new tube. Plug it in when the tube is in place. Attache the PVC hose and tighten down all the clamps.

Install the New Air Cleaner and Finishing Up
Install the new air cleaner to the end of the tube in the shield. Tighten down the clamp. There’s a piece of rubber trim that is installed onto the edge of the shield. Fit it in place and check the hood for clearance.

Double-Check and Tighten:
Make sure everything is seated properly and clamps are tight. Start the engine and listen for leaks or hissing, if it sounds solid, you’re good to go.

Final Thoughts
The aFe cold air intake is one of those upgrades that delivers immediate satisfaction. You feel it in the pedal, you hear it under the hood, and you see it every time you pop the latch and admire your Jeep. It’s not going to turn your TJ into a drag strip monster, but paired with an aFe free-flowing exhaust, it helps the 4.0L breathe more freely. You may even notice some improvement in fuel economy.
Maintain the filter as needed, often the color will fade over time or excess dust/dirt will accumulate from off road use. Just pull the filter off and clean it with some air filter cleaner, give it a good rinsing and oil it with air filter oil.
