Jack Stands

When jacking a vehicle to perform work underneath supporting the vehicle before beginning work is an important safety procedure one should not overlook.  The thought of a 3000lb Jeep hanging over me is uncomfortable enough even while on jack stands let alone a hydraulic jack.
Jack stands come in varying sizes and weight ratings.  They are typically height adjustable by a pin (left) or by a lever that engages teeth in the upper part of the stand (above).

Hold it - Make sure you use jack stands that are weight rated for the vehicle and that they are supported on solid, level ground.  Also, make sure the stand makes proper contact with the underside of the vehicle and is not prone to slipping.

More is better - Using several sets of stands to support a vehicle adds a level of redundancy and lessens the chance of a vehicle falling.

Don't rock the boat - Be cautious of rocking the vehicle when working underneath.  Wrenching and forcing parts can cause the vehicle to move.  If the vehicle is still sitting on some of it's wheels make sure the wheels are secured using chocks to prevent movement.

Variations

Other types of adjustable stands exist.  The most common are taller stands designed for use holding transmissions and engines.  These can be especially useful when a supporting crossmember is removed.

Recommendation

Two sets of properly weight rated stands.  One large and one smaller set allows greater flexibility.
