Sockets

Sockets are the business end of a ratchet, bar, or gun.  They come in many varieties, sizes, and depths.  Some manufacturers make "cheap" weak components and others make superb quality tools.  Buying a good quality set from manufacturers like Craftsman, Matco, and Snap-On will provide years of service.

Socket sizes - SAE, metric.  Deep and shallow.  Having a complete set of both deep and shallow will usually cover all needs.  A spare less-expensive set to keep as an extra is handy.  SAE typical sizes - 5/16, 1/4, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 1" and so on.  Unusual sizes on some Jeeps - 15/16 and 1-1/4.  Metric typical sizes 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, and so on.

Drives - 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4".  The 1/4 to 1/2 sockets are most common.  Typically the 1/2" sets are made up of larger sizes and can take greater torque forces.  The 3/8" drive size fits most of the applications when working on a Jeep.  The larger sized will be used mostly for removing wheels and drive-train work.

Adapters - Decreasing and increasing, usually in single step intervals.  Use decreasing adapters carefully.  Usually smaller sockets on a larger wrench will give out easily.

Types - General Purpose, Spark Plug, Impact, Torx, Hex, Socket-Wrench, Universal.  Jeep, through the years has loved using the Torx ended bolts all over the Jeeps.  Anyone that has worked on a 20 plus year old CJ knows how nice it is to finally remove the last one of these.  We recommend using impact types whenever using powered wrenches, they are made from harder material and will stand up to the pounding an air gun will apply.  Universal sockets are handy but a universal adapter will work too.
