Bolt / Screw Extractor

NorthernTool.com extractor set

We are all bound to experience the "old busted bolt in the threaded frame hole" or similar scenario while working on our Jeeps.  Perhaps following the advice in the Removing Seized Nuts and Bolts section this situation would happen less often but a broken bolt is inevitable and rarely does it happen when it's a nut and bolt.
An extractor is a tool that can save you in the situation of a broken bolt.  Extractors are made of high strength steel and usually have a reversed thread design (shown above) that causes the extractor to dig further into the broken bolt as more force is applied.  Some extractors have sharp teeth (shown on the left) that will dig into the bolt after it has been hammered into the stuck bolt.

Use

  • If necessary (or possible) file or grind the exposed top of the bolt to flatten the top.  Using a center punch attempt to locate the center of the bolt and punch a start hole for drilling.
  • Drill a hole as straight as possible using the appropriate sized drill for the extractor (a pilot hole may be needed first).
  • Apply some thread loosening spray.  Again, see the Removing Seized Nuts and Bolts for recommendations on spray types.
  • Insert the extractor and follow the procedure for the particular extractor.  Be careful not to break the extractor in the drilled hole.  A broken extractor is near impossible to drill out because of their hardness (See Below).
  • Apply even force on the extractor and attempt to remove the broken bolt.

If it seems that removal of the bolt is impossible without breaking the extractor and all other options have been attempted drilling out the hole and using a threaded insert to repair the threads may be needed.  See Threaded Inserts.

Removing a Broken Extractor

A broken extractor is difficult to remove.  Using a small punch it is possible to break up the extractor in the hole and remove the pieces.  Drilling on the extractor will just dull a drill bit.

Recommendation

A set of common sized extractors of either design.
