Engine Hoist or Shop Crane or "Cherry Picker" Lift

Overview

A shop crane or commonly called cherry picker lift is a tool to aid in lifting and/or lowering of heavy objects.  Most of these cranes use a hydraulic jack to provide the lifting power.  Shop cranes have many uses besides just pulling out engines, other uses include lifting engines, transmissions, frames, and other heavy components.  Since most cranes have wheels they allow moving of heavy objects around the shop with relative ease.

Variations and Options

Most shop cranes are similar in design, where they vary is in the weight capacity and portability/storability.

Often cranes have a moveable boom that allows greater weight to be lifted by moving the boom inward.  Doing this does sacrifice the boom's reach.

The ability to store the crane when not in use is usually an important factor when selecting a crane.  Many models come with folding legs and a collapsible boom that allow for storage in a smaller area.  Other options include a load leveling attachment point (shown on the right).

Recommendation

A crane is a handy tool and well worth the investment.  A 2 ton foldable unit should fit most needs.
