History of the Vehicle Identification Number “VIN”

In the mid 1950’s American automobile manufacturers began stamping and casting identifying numbers on cars and their parts. The vehicle identification number has become referred to as the “VIN”. The obvious purpose was to give an accurate description of the vehicle when mass production numbers were starting to climb in very significant numbers. Research has shown that early VIN’s came in all sorts of variations which depended on the individual manufacturer at that time.

In the early 1980’s the National highway Traffic Safety Administration (U.S. Dept. of Transport) required that all road vehicles must contain a 17 character VIN. This established the fixed VIN system for major vehicle manufacturers as it is known today. Thus, establishing a unique “DNA” style number for each unique vehicle which rolled off the assembly line.

The VIN has 17 characters to provide details about your Jeep, manual decoding is not difficult. Each character represents something about your Jeep, such as the model year, body style, engine, transmission, and other specs with the exception of the check digit. This character is called a “check digit” because it is designed to protect the consumer from theft and possible fraud. The manufacturer is required to include a check digit in the ninth position by U.S. federal law. The check digit is used by the manufacturer and government agencies to verify authenticity of the vehicle and official documentation.

Parts of the VIN

There are two different standards for the Vehicle Identification Number. The ISO standard, 3779, is copied by the European Union. In North America, a more stringent (but compatible) system is used.

The VIN is composed of the following sections:

1955-1971 Willys and Kaiser Jeep CJ VIN Numbers

1955 to 1971 Jeep CJ VIN numbers are usually located in several possible locations. You should find a tin plate on the drivers side firewall and/or on the dash inside the Jeep. Jeeps prior to 1962 typically used a serial number. 1962 and later Jeeps used VIN numbers.

The CJ-5 added a bit of refinement to the CJ with a slightly larger size, improved suspension and added engine options. The CJ-6 was essentially a CJ-5 with 20 inches added behind the door.

While Kaiser acquired Willys in 1953 the Willys name continued on the Jeep until 1963. Kaiser was acquired in 1970 by American Motors.

1971-1986 AMC Era Jeep CJ VIN Numbers

1975 to 1986 Jeep CJ VIN numbers are usually located in several possible locations. You should find a tin plate on the drivers side firewall near the brake master cylinder. You may also find one on the drivers side dash or the inside body panel by the floor near the parking brake lever. On mid 80’s models it should also appear on the windshield wiper motor cover inside the Jeep. An abbreviated version is usually found on the top of the passenger side frame rail above the rear wheel.

The AMC era of CJ’s are considered by many to be the finest era of CJ that was ever made. Strong engines and modern touches made the Jeep easier to drive while keeping the original Jeep spirit. The 10″ longer CJ-7 introduced in 1976 brought some changes like a hard top and automatic transmission.

1987 to 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ VIN Numbers

The Jeep Wrangler YJ was Jeep’s next generation Jeep replacing the aged CJ series. Jeep Wrangler YJ VIN numbers can be found on the inside of the windshield on the drivers side.

The YJ attempted to bring the Jeep into modern day with the addition of an improved interior, better handling and better engine and transmission offerings. Originally this model of Jeep was only liked by a few but in recent years their used value has drastically increased. The YJ is easily identified by the square headlights.

jeepfan.com 2004 TJ Unlimited

Jeep Wrangler TJ VIN numbers can be found on the inside of the windshield on the drivers side. The TJ introduced the coil spring suspension to the Jeep that was a game changer to handling on and off road. While the TJ remained nearly the same size as the YJ and CJ-7 the suspension redesign along with interior improvments make this Jeep a favorite of those Jeepers looking to keep close to the Jeep’s roots.

2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK VIN Guide

Perhaps the JK brought the biggest change to the Jeep line since the CJ-7 in 1976. The JK model was the first to offer a four door open roof model (called Unlimited) that brought a drastic improvement of interior space making this model a viable option to many. Further improvements to almost everything made this Jeep a quick favorite to Jeep owners. To note, over 2 million JK’s were built in its 11 year run!

The VIN plate on a JK can be easiest located through the front of the driver side of the windshield. In addition it can be found on the sticker in the driver side door frame.
