Pole Building a.k.a. Pole Barn

Many do not know what a pole building actually is, even though they can be found just about anywhere.  These buildings are extremely versatile and provide maximum interior space.  Often they are used in farming, animal stables, storage, municipal, and automotive purposes.

Pole buildings are constructed differently than traditional frame construction.  These buildings are built by using the post framing method.  In modern pole buildings posts are used instead of poles.  Usually 6X6 posts are secured into the ground and the entire structure is supported by the posts.  Normally the roof is constructed of pre-assembled roof trusses and can vary in width from 12 to 32 feet.  Larger widths may be available too.  Length of the building is usually a factor of 8 but can realistically be any length.  Pole buildings are constructed first then the floor is poured afterward.  Some buildings may not even have a floor but for automotive purposes it is wise.

The construction time of a pole building is usually drastically less than a traditional framed building and the cost of construction is often a fraction.  Since there is no footer excavation is kept to a minimum.

Choosing your building design and size will be your toughest decision. There are almost limitless options in designs, colors, door quantity and location.  The image to the above right shows a building with a side porch, the image below and shows a building with a side porch and attic area.

Thoughts on building...

A 24X24 building is probably a minimum in size for a Jeepers garage.  We think a 32X32 size is even better, naturally if you have the space build it as big as you can afford.  Using a higher ceiling can provide increased room and allow for storage on high shelves.  Give room to tool boxes and workbenches.  Insulation should be considered if you live in an area that gets cold.  There are several heating systems that can be put into pole buildings.  Radiant heating is quite effective but most costly.  This system keeps consists of piping that is imbedded into the concrete floor and the heat system circulates warm water through the pipes to heat the floor to around 85 degrees.  Nothing is nicer than working on a vehicle and having a warm floor below you.  Other systems used forced hot air or radiators.
