In developing the best exhaust kit on the market for the JK, Cool Tech performed a significant amount of research and development. First, it was obvious that the best location for a muffler, if possible, would be under the mid-section of the JK and NOT under the rear tub as virtually every other cat-back manufacturer provides for. A change in the location of the muffler clearly improves off-road clearance. Also, the stock muffler is large and very restrictive. Cool Tech tested numerous different muffler brands and even several in/out muffler offset configurations within the same muffler type. The objective was to find a muffler that added a nice exhaust tone but which was not loud and not "import" sounding. Cool Tech could not accept a muffler design/configuration that would allow an exaust "drone" at any speed or RPM.
Finally, in re-locating the muffler, a design had to be chosen that would not transmit un-wanted heat to the floorboard of the JK. Once a location was chosen, only mufflers with internal heat shielding were evaluated and tested. The final muffler choice ran substantially cooler than other similar mufflers, and in Cool Tech's on-road testing, the floorboard never became excessively hot. However, Cool Tech wanted to achieve an OEM-like installation, and chose to include a custom heat shield in the final kit. The heat shield is extremely effective. Regardless of the severe testing conditions, you can alway place you hand on the floorboard from UNDERNEATH the JK and, at most, it would be warm but NEVER hot.

The Cool Tech kit eliminates the stock muffler (29 lbs) and uses a double heat shielded, fully polished stainless steel muffler and locates it in the mid-section of the JK. The Cool Tech design retains the factory over-the-axle section. The factory piece is a mandrel bent, full 2.5" piece that has been specially treated to resist corrosion. By retaining this factory section, Cool Tech can reduce costs and can also insure the full factory suspension (axle) travel.
The Cool Tech JK Exhaust Kit gives you these advantages:
1. Improved exhaust note - the sound is a little bit louder and deeper. It is NOT loud, nor will it drone at any constant RPM. The exhaust note is deeper and does NOT sound like an import car.
2. Increased HP. The muffler manufacturer has seen improvements of 6-8 HP. (Cool Tech dyno test results are pending and will be posted soon.)
3. Improved muffler location. Muffler is moved to a "safer" off-roading location with protection by the JK frame rails.
4. Weight savings. The Cool Tech exhaust system saves 14 lbs of weight and better locates the weight between the axles.
The Cool Tech JK Exhaust was designed to improve the off-roading capabilities of the Jeep. The revised exhaust outlet location does not exit below the rear bumper. As such, the outlet location mitigates damage caused by off-roading and it also is compatible with nmrous rear bumper alternatives tht JK owners can choose from.
