Powertrax Traction System No-Slip Locker Review

First some details...from Powertrax

The POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEM is the latest design in traction adding differential technology. It combines smooth operation with the traction performance of a locking differential.

A precise synchronization mechanism eliminates the ratcheting sounds typical of other locking differentials. Special gear and spring design reduce the backlash and therefore driveline windup. Only ultra strength material is used which is 67% stronger than titanium.

Installation is simple because no ring and pinion set-up is required. In addition, no special tools or oils are needed. Step by step model specific instructions are provided with every kit.

The POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS are the ideal solution for just about any light truck, sport utility, and muscle car on the road today. Whether you need the safety of added traction for daily commuting, recreation, work, or just so your muscle car puts power to the pavement instead of burning one wheel up, the POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS are your answer.

We installed one of these in a Dana 30 front axle in Matt's CJ-7.  Matt's Jeep runs 33" Swampers, Tera-Low, rear Lock Right, and a 4.2L 6 cyl.  It has been a perfect addition to the Jeep.  Additional traction was noticeable immediately.  There were no real adverse affects with having an automatic locker in the front of the Jeep, the locker is almost invisible when driving off road.  If the Jeep's hubs are in on the street there is a slight noticeable pull when steering from a dead stop.  With the Jeep's hubs out the locker is disconnected so there is no noticeable difference.

The Powertrax locker does not exhibit the signs of most automatic lockers because of its synchronization of the gears.  Installation was rather easy and does not require and ring and pinion re-setup.

The simplified version of the install is...

Remove the differential cover and drain the gear oil, remove the wheels, brake assembly, hubs, wheel bearings, and wheel hub.  At this point the axle and the old spider gears can be removed.  Depending on the gear ratio that is currently in the jeep you may need to remove the ring gear and carrier so the ring gear can be removed so the cross pin will clear the ring gear.

Install the Powertrax locker into the carrier and reverse the installation procedure.

A front locker adds an element of traction that gives an extra boost of confidence to a driver in some off road situations.  The front tires seem to just lift themselves up onto obstacles instead of having to be shoved up by the driving wheels.

Long term results on the locker have been positive, there has been no problems or breakage.  Great product!
