Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap Intake Manifold for AMC V8 Review

Some info provided by Edelbrock

Performer Air-Gap® & RPM Air-Gap® Manifolds
This award-winning design incorporates the same race-winning technology that's been used on our Victor Series competition intakes for years. The air-gap design features an open air space that separates the runners from the hot engine oil resulting in a cooler, denser charge for more power. RPM Air-Gap manifolds are modeled after Performer RPM intakes for high performance street power from 1500-to-6500 rpm, and the new Performer Air-Gap manifolds are ideal for street performance from idle-to-5500 rpm.

AMC 290-401 V8
RPM AIR-GAP AMC (1500-6500 rpm)
Designed for 1970-91 304-401 c.i.d. and 1967-69 290-390 c.i.d. V8s, RPM Air-Gaps incorporate the same race-winning technology as our Victor Series competition intakes. The air-gap design features an open air space that separates the runners from the hot engine oil for a cooler, denser charge and more power. Includes standard oil fill and PCV provisions as well as early air conditioning support bracket accessory bosses. For square-bore carbs. No provision for exhaust-heated chokes. No exhaust crossover.

Installation Notes: Recommended intake gasket: Fel-Pro #MS96011. #7531 has two center bolt holes offset. Manifold height: A-4.45", B-5.77".  Port exit dimensions: 1.04" x 2.10". Bracket #8034 required for 1979 and later vehicles.

We installed one of these on Rich's 84 CJ-7 which is equipped with a well built AMC 360.  This Jeep engine produces oodles of power.  See the 84 CJ-7 Frame Up Restoration section for more specifics on the engine.

Installation is rather typical for an intake manifold.  Performance of the high rise manifold is excellent including throttle response and high rpm running.  We would not recommend this manifold for a slow moving trail Jeep due to it's power range.  A mud, street, or drag racing Jeep would benefit better from this design.  Cold weather performance is not the best due to the air gap which prevents the carb from warming up properly.  Performance does increase as the engine reaches temperature but is not 100%.

If you are looking to create a high rpm, high horsepower AMC Jeep engine consider the Air Gap Intake.  As with most Edelbrock products it usually lives up to it's name.
