QUESTION: I was just wondering how the YJ-CJ BDS lift is working out on the 78′ CJ5. I am interested in purchasing this exact lift from OK4wd. It will be going on my 85 Laredo CJ7. Tim S.
ANSWER: The jeepfan.com CJ-5 is still running with the BDS 3.5″ YJ springs for more than 10 years and still rides great. There hasn’t been an noticeable sagging or other wear over the years.

81 Jeep Scrambler Production Sequence Numbers
QUESTION: Ok, first you guys provide excellent info on this site, I recommend it to all my Jeep guys. But I need some help, I just bought an early 81 CJ8 and was wondering if you could help me figure out it’s production number? I get everything for decoding the VIN but the SSN part is messing me up. With a SSN of 010085, I know there weren’t 10,000 some CJ8′s made in 81. So any help would be great. Neil C.
ANSWER: Sometime Jeep left us with mysteries that unfortunately were lost to the masses when American Motors was bought by Chrysler. It’s probable that the numbers were out of sequence or started at a number. Perhaps your Jeep was number 85 instead of 10085? I think no one will ever really know.
Jeep Wrangler JK wheels on a Jeep Liberty
QUESTION: I just removed the 255/70R18 wheels and tires from our 2011 Wrangler. I have a niece who has a 2004 Liberty and would like to put these tires and wheels on it. I know I need an adapter from 5X4.5 to 5X5. But what about tire rub? Will this work without lifting the Liberty? Any help or idea is much appreciated. Dan B.
ANSWER: You are correct about the adapter but it’s probably not a good idea on a Liberty. The wheel adapters will move the wheels out about 1.25″ which will usually cause rubbing against the wheel wells. A lift would help.
Do all Jeep CJ-5′s have a tailgate?
QUESTION: I have checked out the vin# and everything matches, how can I find out if my CJ-5 came with a tail gate ? It does not have one and have been told jeep has always had a tailgate.
ANSWER: CJ-5′s after 1976 did have factory tailgates unless it was ordered without one. So there you have it..seems it could be either. Jeep redesigned the floor plan of the CJ series to accommodate a wider rear frame section and began using an optional rear mounted spare tire which meant no tailgate. It seems that it was easier for Jeep to just make the rear of the body solid than design a swinging tire carrier and tailgate.
Just as a piece of CJ trivia a CJ-7 tailgate and tire carrier will not fit a CJ-5. The CJ-7 body is a few inches higher than a CJ-5.

Swapping a CJ-7 Frame into a YJ Wrangler
QUESTION: Will a CJ-7 frame work for a wrangler YJ? The YJ frame is rusted out at the shackle mounts and I would like a clean frame rather than repair the one I have I have come across several CJ-7 frames but don’t know if they will work with minor mods. Mike C.
ANSWER: While technically possible to make this work it’s unpractical. The YJ frame is very different from a CJ. The rear of the YJ frame is wider and almost all the mounts are in different locations. The swap would require a large amount of fabrication. The YJ frame is much stronger than the CJ-7. Our advice, find a YJ one.
2.5 Inch Lift Kit for a 92 Jeep Wrangler
QUESTION: I am looking to purchase a 2.5 inch lift kit for my 92 Jeep Wrangler. Some of the kits have just the springs and shocks, while others have brake line extensions, transfer case drop kits and other items. Are these additional items required for the 2.5 lift and if so do you know of a Old Man Emu lift kit that contains everything I need? Thanks Phil L.
ANSWER: On a YJ it’s not always necessary to add a transfer case drop and/or brake line kits. The transfer case drop will allow the drive train to maintain a less steep angle and avoid vibration. The brake line brackets will help if you off-road your Jeep a lot.
The Old Man Emu 2.5″ system does come with the transfer case drop brackets, shocks, and springs. Probably all you would need. Contact OK Auto for exact application and pricing.
