Fuel Pump Installation
The fuel pump is going to be mounted in the same location as the Pro-Jection pump which is located on the passenger side frame rail above the rear spring perch. The new pump hangs a little low, not that it would be hit by anything but sticks or brush could get tangled in the wiring. A protective shield may be fabricated to keep the pump safe. Read more

A new gasket was placed on top of the manifold and the carb was bolted in place following the tightening procedure outlined in the manual. Holley Truck Avenger Carburetor Install
For 11 years this 78 CJ-5 ran a Holley 2bbl Pro-Jection throttle body fuel injection system. The system was rather simple and worked well. The trail advantages of the TBI were obvious on hills and bounces, the disadvantages were the computer controls and unpredictable failures.
Installing a Chrysler 727 into a CJ

After a few years the engine that Rich had built started showing some signs of being tired. AMC engines are known for some design weaknesses and the fact that they aren’t the most popular engine makes good rebuilders hard to find. After deciding to replace the engine with a fresh one he also decided to convert the Jeep to an automatic. The factory T-4 was just waiting to be broken by the torque and horsepower from the 360 and an automatic just makes driving a little more comfortable. Read more

Issues right off the bat…what else will not fit?
The new engine was placed in it’s new home, next the transmission and transfer case were installed. Since this Jeep never had an automatic some issues became apparent right away. The in-frame Hedman headers will not fit due to contact with the transmission oil pan. The solution to this was a set of Edelbrock manifold headers. Read more

The Tear Down
The front wheels were removed and the Jeep was lowered as far as possible to aid in getting the engine over the grille of the Jeep. All the hoses, lines, and electrical were removed from the engine as well as the front accessories. Read more
