Sue’s 79 CJ-7

Posted in Readers Jeeps

You won’t find this Jeep on the trail but wow, what a nice Jeep!  Sue from Iowa bought this CJ-7 in 1979 brand new and drove it daily for the first 4 years. It wasn’t long after she met her husband that the Jeep started getting modified. Sue’s husband Mike has a 79 Mustang Cobra that he has been showing since new and Sue followed along with the Jeep. New BDS 3" Lift for the JK

Posted in Blog
Just installed the new 3″ BDS lift and it’s nice. Ride quality is actually better than before. Very smooth but yet firm and solid when it counts. Probably due to the variable rate shocks. Need to do some tweaking and get an alignment still.

BDS 3″ Lift for Wrangler JK Rubicon – Part 5

Lifting a Wrangler JK or TJ will cause the axle to shift to one side due to the increased angle of the front track bar. In the rear adding a drop bracket will correct the angle and place the axle back where it belongs. The front is a different story. The steering drag link and track bar need to stay on the same angle or bump steer will occur. Two solutions exist to correct this issue. Read more

Installing the Rear

Raise the Jeep and support by jack stands under the frame in front of the rear control arm mounts. We also add additional support for the rear of the Jeep with a high lift jack under the rear bumper. Keep the rear axle supported by a floor jack at close to ride height for now. Read more

BDS 3″ Lift for Wrangler JK Rubicon

In the early stages of the jeepfan.com JK we installed a 2.5″ Tera Flex Budget Boost lift kit. The kit has served the Jeep well in the year it was installed but it has come time to upgrade to a “real” lift that includes shocks, springs, etc.

Wrangler JK Front Track Bar

Posted in Blog

QUESTION: Your tech article about the rear BDS track bar bracket for the JK makes sense and was very informitive, but what about the front of the JK after a 2.5″ Tera Flex lift. Why wouldn’t there need to be an adjustment to the front axle? Howie

ANSWER: The front track bar angle seems to affect the Jeep less than the rear. A bigger component in the front is the steering drag link. That’s the rod that goes from the steering box to the passenger side axle knuckle. If the track bar and drag link are at different angles the Jeep will experience bad bump steer. Using a track bar bracket in the front requires using a drop pitman arm of the same size. Recently we upgraded the jeepfan.com to a full BDS 3″ lift in which we installed an adjustable track bar. This bar doesn’t change the angle but allows the front axle to be centered after the lift causes the axle to shift slightly to one side.

Bryan’s 1980 CJ-7

Posted in Readers Jeeps

This pristine CJ-7 is kind of a “one-off” CJ in that it has some factory equipment on it that isn’t normally found on a CJ. A perfect example of Jeep’s way of using up what they have.  See Bryan’s 1980 Revisited for recent changes.
