Question: Finding FSJ Jeep Truck J1000 Parts

Posted in Blog

Question: I just bought a 1970 Jeep J1000 and cannot find any lifts or any aftermarket parts at all for it, can you direct me to somewhere that i can get a lift for this and other parts? Derek

Answer: We don’t specialize in these kinds of Jeeps but we can probably send you in the right direction. First off finding parts for these Jeeps can be tough. I have found that searching the internet using the term “FSJ” (full size Jeep) makes things a lot easier.

BJ’s Off Road has a wide variety of parts and information on FSJ including lifts.
Jeep Junkie Magazine (formerly FSJ Magazine) is another good resource for what you may be looking for.

Question: Jeep Levi’s Edition

Posted in Blog

Question: What makes a CJ a Levi edition? Is there a VIN number or digit somewhere on the vehicle? Is it just a badge and seat covering?I am buying one and I want to know if this is real.Thank you!!! William B.

Answer: Jeep VIN numbers (especially older ones) never indicated that much detail such as Levi’s, Renegade, etc. In answering your question the Levi’s version didn’t have anything overly special to the Jeep. As far as I can find the model you are asking about has just a Levi’s badge above the Jeep logo, Levi’s denim seats with Levi’s buttons, and a top made of a different material. Certainly not a rare collectors item, and doesn’t really make the Jeep more valuable. Now a perfectly kept Levi’s Jeep would be a find but then any CJ nicely kept is special.

Question: Should a T150 share gear oil with a Dana 20?

Posted in Blog

Question: I recently had my T-150 rebuilt i also put a new clutch. I love the way it runs and shifts. My problem is when I am driving the oil from my transmisson goes in to my transfer case. Then my transfer case starts to vent because there is to much fluid. The guys at the tranny shop say they are suppose to share fluid. (I have a model 20 transfer case) My shop manual says only the T-15 shares fluid. Is there any way they could have thought it was a T-15 and put the new gear and bearings in a T-150 case? Thank you for your time I love your page. Michael
Thanks for the compliments,

Answer: They shouldn’t share oil. While there isn’t a perfect seal between the two the bearing will generally prevent the oil from coming across. Having the T150 over full will cause it to leak but only until it reaches it’s “happy place”. I ran a T150 in my CJ for years without any problem. I think the only solution will require removing the transfer case and checking the rear bearing on the transmission. I am pretty sure the T-150 and T-15 parts and not interchangable.

Installing Headlight Relays in a CJ

Posted in Blog

Ever notice how your CJ’s headlights are dim or wonder why light switches go bad? The answer is a simple problem with too much current trying to go through too much length and too little guage wire. The wiring design of a CJ routes all electrical current through the headlight switch to the headlights. The excess length of the path reduces the total current that gets to the lights.

This can be solved by installing a set of headlight relays. The relays use the headlight switch to only turn on the relay, which requires almost no current. The relay takes care of feeding the power to the lights.

We did a full article on installing headlight relays, check it out.

New JK Wrangler – 1 month review

Posted in Blog

Well it’s been a month and 1500 miles on the new JK. I am still very happy with it and and REAL glad I got the 4 door instead of the 2. Mind, I still love the 2 door also but you just can’t beat the room and convienience of the 4 door. I have had several opportunitites to drive without the roof panels and it is a pleasure, overlooking the teeth incident.

Some real nice things…

  • Satellite radio – I LOVE satellite radio, I tried the other day to listen to the regular radio but after 2 minutes of commercials I switched back.
  • Power windows – no explanation needed.
  • Power locks/keyless entry – no explanation needed here either.
  • Traction control and ESP – excellent in the rain and snow, the Jeep seems to have a mind of it’s own and it’s good. I was trying to do donuts in the snow and it’s almost impossible with the ESP on.
  • Sloping hood – an inceased slope on the hood allows for better forward visibility.
  • Good gas mileage – I have been averaging 18.8.

Some not so nice things…

  • Lack of engine power – DCX, could we please have at least 50 more HP? The Jeep does hold it’s own but it’s absolutely no speed demon.
  • Defrosters – I think it needs an extra vent or two to help melt the snow and ice off the bottom corners of the windshield.
  • Not enough storage cubies up front. There isn’t enough little places to stuff things like sunglasses, gloves, and what not.

Oil change coming soon.

Neato JK Power Lock Tweaks

Posted in Blog

I have been messing around with the various tweaks one can make to their JK’s power locks. The factory setting wasn’t quite good enough for me so I went investigating and perfecting the procedure for making these lock settings good for me.

1. The JK locks all it’s doors when you hit about 15 mph, this is fine but when you stop and need to get into the back you need to unlock all the doors. I have had countless times leaving the Jeep, then walking back to unlock the doors to get in. There is a lock setting that still auto-locks the doors but unlocks all when you open either front door.

2. The honk when you lock it using the fob, it is loud and disturbing. I turned that off so only the lights flash when the Jeep is locked.

After 3.5 Hours at the Dentist

Posted in Blog

I have a regular looking smile again. In case you missed it read the blog entry from yesterday, I had a bit of a mishap with a JK roof panel.

It was pretty interesting what a good dentist is capable of. He completely restored the two teeth I broke when I ran into the roof panel I was carrying. Personally, I believe the teeth look better now than before.

I am not mad at my Jeep or myself, it seems I have always been good for an unusual story.
